Split Ends: Tomb Raider Reborn

so.  here's another entry for a contest going down over at deviantart.  really hard not to resist doing anything when they tempt you with an after party hosted by Ben Franklin and a bunch of his homies.

anyway, if you're interested - i gots the step-by-step for this over on my tumblr.

also, here's a lovely free online game that was recently brought to my attention. Fear Less!  love the music, love the design... and the concept is on a higher psychological level that i TOTALLY dig.  kinda gave me the warm-fuzzies like Coma..     also Little Nemo, if we wanna go way back...  still love that game.   I have a suspicion that The Matrix was somewhat inspired by Winsor Mccay (author/illustrator of the original comic strips that inspired the game)  I mean, there's a king named "Morpheus," and Nemo original receives an invite to slumberland from some random chick (Trinity??) COINCIDENCE!?!? maybe. :]

just love games about sleep/dream/exploring the subconscious-y kinda stuff.
if you know me, you know that i sleep. a lot. and for a LONG time..  left un-acted upon by an outside force, i'm usually in bed for 9-12 hours...  being asleep all this time, i've noticed things, and here's a few of them, while on this subject:

thing 1) when i'm actively writing down my dreams, they're easier to remember.

thing 2) not only do i remember them easier, but i remember more dreams than just one.

thing 3) when i'm in peek dream remembering condition, i can usually make out 5 dreams that happened in one night...  which is cool, if you think about the following:  a sleep cycle is about 90 minutes.  on average i'd get about 7 and a half hours of sleep... which averages out to FIVE SLEEP CYCLES.
does ONE DREAM = ONE SLEEP CYCLE?????  COINCIDENCE??!?! i have no idea....
goodnight everybody!

YO YO YO!!

wuddup bloggerverse!!  got some updates comin to a web browser near YOU.  still trying to get the daily creative grind going.  here's a large helping of random stuff in no particular order:

redesign of one my friend's characters, check out how i flipped it over at http://scottwiser.com/character-driven/ (for day 9)

some more signed sketches complete with ordering a copy of Mariachi-Dachi directly through me.  ;)

gettin some major ANGST out because of reasons that ended up not being that big of deal.. life is funny like that sometimes.  sometimes it's NOT though.

entry to Chamba's character contest (almost didn't enter, because early on.. some EXTREMELY FRESHH designs had already been submitted.  ha.)

hardly touch anything related to the whole sci-fi genre.  figured i was due.  if there were more hoodies in sci-fi genre, i'd probably do some more....  errr maybe i'll start doing SCI-FI HOODIES!!  it could catch on, yeah?  gotta rep the street, even in the FUTURE!!  heh heh..

was royally SUCKING it up, trying to get into some freelance work..  doodled this up to break up the sucking.  felt a lot better :]

all four images above were done on the ipad, using procreate, and the huge nubby wacom stylus.  really fun stuff.  IN LOVE with the smudge tool.  moved from painting to drawing to see how it all feels.  probably wont get any more detailed than the last one (done around Christmas) unless i get a more accurate stylus..  the nubby-ness just gets to be too much for me the smaller you try and draw.

no idea what to say about this guy....  just trying to mix things up i guess.

elephant master...  of HARD KNOCKS.

based off the actor that acted in a dramatization based off the life of the real hulk hogan of japan.  RIKIDOZAN!!
my little pony.  just LOVE all the fanart i see of it littering the boulevards of the information superhighway.  had to do some of my own.  ;)

 pumpgaroo?

he's got a solid jab, but i'll bet you anything his kicks are more powerful.

last but not least: ever since i was super little, i've been making up my own versions of mega man bosses.  ladies and gentlemen, i give you, "Tribal Man."  power you acquire?  spear throwy thingy.  it sticks into walls, and you can jump on them.

THE END.

got some comics i'm working on/other secret things....  hope to let some of it surface within the next few months.  still hunting jobs of all kinds - freelance/full-time/part-time and figuring out how I, MYSELF, can be a full-time job. in the words of MC LARS (emphasis added, to make my point)

"Look - all I want to see is amazing art
Invest your heart and play your part
Perfect your craft and straight do you
If you don't do you then who's going to?
Just push it, push it, make it awesome
Build those concepts get it poppin "
(lyrics from Nerdcore Died)

if you're an "artist" or creator of any kind, that's one of the most empowering things to believe in/work on.  nobody's better at being you than YOURSELF.  so keep working on being that...  and be excellent to each other.  ;)

later doods!

INKTOBER DUMP

Inktober has come and gone...  lots of fun this time around - helped me stay productive, develop some projects further, and have lots of fun with ink!  ...and slightly mimicking instagram photos, making some animated gifs, and showing a little love with some fan art here and there.  if you want explanations..  you're gonna have to dig through my tumblr or deviantart links on the sidebar --->

INKTOBER DUMP:

if you've made it this far, what would a blogger post be without a link to some MUZAK!!
so.  i've actually been (moderately) obsessed with THIS SONG by Midicronica for about....  4 or 5 years??  recently decided to look for more of their music, and found some good ones.  but more importantly, found THIS MUSIC VIDEO...  it's like, some rad Japanese Halloween version of the Gorillaz or something..  not sure what it is, but there's just something really nostalgic about how it all feels to me...
the end.

Bike Girl, and some Bruce Lee ramblings

another exercise at work - supposed to do something inspired by the photo...  and for some reason, i really wasn't feeling anything that day except for the fact that she had a hood, and a dog.  one thing led to another, the whole time me not really being sure what was happening...  and now here we are!!

trying to push the loose feel i had a couple posts ago, but maybe in a slightly different direction.  agonized over color scheme for about 4 days...  at peace with myself now.. haha.  fun times.

also...  trying REALLY hard not to use the word "style."
i watched I AM BRUCE LEE last week, and was reminded of some really cool stuff I had written down a long time ago after reading through Jeet Kune Do, basically Bruce Lee's personal study journal, and applying it to other things in life.  like drawing!

probably a post for another time, but here's basically what i got out of it:
work hard to find what works best for you, but be honest about what's working.  and eventually, you'll be able to honestly express yourself through what you're doing - even though it's HARD WORK to pull that off.  styles separate people and prevent more collaborative learning opportunities, so we shouldn't conform to them - "styles" should conform to PEOPLE.  the individual is more important than "the" martial art being taught, the type of brush somebody's using in photoshop, the bread somebody uses to make a sandwich...  you get the idea.

it's all about how you do what you do, and nobody's better at doing what you do than YOU.  the trick is filtering through principles, techniques, and people using them, to find your own - all while trying to find that harmony with yourself, other people, and whatever situation you're in.

easiest for me to quantify all of this into (since i've played A LOT of) fighting games:
>>level one - button mashing (familiarizing self with characters, environments, game situations)
>>level two - learning moves (familiarizing self with how to use characters in environments and situations)
>>level three - timing moves (familiarizing self with when to use character's moves in based on experience in situations)
>>level four - instinct and feeling (familiarizing time is OVER, except for playing against new people - technique, timing in situation all instinctively done almost on their own - using instinct also to know when to revert back to any of the previous levels for a desired effect)

kinda fun to see what that means in other areas of life.  like making sandwiches or something.  heh.

....i think i'll stop right there.  once i get started on this kind of stuff it's hard for me to stop.  and it's late.
props if you actually read through all of that - double props for if it was actually somehow meaningful to you.
goodnight.

gallery stuff and squiggles

so, i'm taking this plein air class right?  we're painting the provo tabernacle next to Window Box Gallery, right?  One thing led to another, and now we're all in part of this show there, and the opening social will be  during the Friday Night Gallery Stroll, December 2, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  you can come if you want.  you can also by my picture if you want...  cause it'll be for sale.  cool huh?

also, for the same class, now that it's getting kinda too cold to be painting outside, we're doing stuff based on some of the studies we did.  you''ll notice that part of downtown provo is making a cameo in this one.  also, i'm ripping off the white mage a little (kind of a lot actually..) cause i think it would make for a sweet hoodie design.. heh.

also, here are some results from playing "squiggles."  squiggles is where you get somebody to make some crazy line on your paper, without the line crossing over itself (because then it becomes a "scribble"..  and i wasn't playing "scribbles") and then you turn it into something.  i like to add the extra challenge of asking them if they want me to do a human, animal, environment or vehicle...  just so i don't go for the easiest solution.  pretty fun stuff.

and here's me playing squiggles with myself, where i'll just lightly kinda do some random squiggles/lines without any purpose, until i can see something cool... and then i go for it.

so yeah..  inktober didn't really happen for me..  but i'm okay with that.  been trying to juggle homework, work, freelance work, and graduating all at the same time... next year man.  next year.

remember Mariachi-Dachi???  well i certainly do.  i've now got a solid script in the works (my brother Kyle's been helping me out a lot with it too!!) - almost done actually.  got the mariachi band all figured out, the main bad guy, and some side characters.  i may put up some of the designs later, but once i start knocking out panels beginning of january, i'll let you in on some sneak peeks before it all gets finished/printed, and i graduate, and disappear from the internet forever, or something like that.  or something completely opposite like that.  whatevs.
