mannnnnnnn.... that whole christmas/new year's break was pretty awesome, wasn't it!!? i could toooootally go for another one. like, right now.

anyway - here are some exercises from work. first one, we were given a photo of a (somewhat) mad scientist and were supposed to just go wherever the photo took us. second one was to create some heavy duty mech or vehicle from a household appliance OR create a heavy duty household appliance. i call this one, "the j0nny" heh heh..

i've always wondered why it seems like the life of my drawings get sucked out of them as soon i start trying to paint them, and about a little less than a year ago i think i finally figured it out. just felt like blogging it for whatever random reason just now.. here we go:

design bias or design hierarchy. (it's called design "bias" because, we all like and are bias towards different things - and are bias of different things at different times. think of it as having a hierarchy of things you value most in making a particular picture at a particular time.)

like life, you can't do/have EVERYTHING all at once. and who really wants EVERYTHING?.. think about how cluttered and awful your life would be. you've gotta find your purpose/goals, prioritize your desires, and decide which things you like doing (and the things you don't) will get you where you want to be. your bias can change depending on the need. it's fine.

if i don't make a clear decision, all kinds of design principles might sneak in and compete with each other for being the most important thing... and i might not even like which one ends up winning... i might even HATE it.

so in these exercises, i was also balancing what i love doing with other things i like to do, but down-play ones that compete so i don't ruin my picture (in my eyes.) in my case, i like to let my lines do the talking instead of the paint - too much paint (or even color/value for that matter) overpowers the lines and makes them less important..... BUT THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART FOR ME!! no matter how awesome you're lineweight, or gesture, or sketchy... whatever. as soon as the value/color/rendering of your image starts going up, your lines start to take a back seat. if you're cool with that - DO IT. it's kinda fun thinking about who you want to win in a design principles sanctioned street fight. form vs. shape... line vs. color.. value vs. story?? and color could really go up against form or shape or anybody else. you've just gotta decide which one you're bias towards so you can help throw the match, rig the fight, and be happy with who wins. think about how dumb cheering equally for two teams playing against each other is.

i almost just typed that CONTRAST was the same thing, but now that i think about it.. BIAS helps me think about what i want happening, and what i like vs. what i'm down playing.. so for now, in my mind... contrast is really just how two fighters relate being placed next to each other, and bias is deciding how the fight goes between them rather than just letting it happen.

so... the titles i'm coming up with for these blog posts keep getting more and more creative... i'm okay with that.. heh.

anyway. finals are done, and it's time to take a break kind of. been painting a lot, and i think it's finally starting to show. random sketches and maybe a sneak peak of some mariachi-dachi character designs on the way. soon as 2012 hits, gotta start cranking on that project... estimated (what's left of) existing social interaction should drop by a large percentage. finished comic book = i graduate from school. who woulda thought...

here's some stuff i did this semester.. starting with my two favorite plein air gouache paintings for some class..

really had fun with this last one.. when back to my dragonball roots a little - felt really good. wouldn't take much to turn that giant into krillin.

Troll Mantis

so. here's a 30 - 45 minute exercise from work.
norwegian troll + some kind of animal, but still in that norwegian-esque style. i picked praying mantis.. kinda fun! first couple attempts were awful though.. heh.

ps - speaking of things half something/half MANTIS... you should check out MAN MANTIS. unless you don't like cool music. then don't. no pressure. i love saying this guy's name, by the way... i mean come on. MAN MANTIS!! heh.

while on the subject of music... apparently there's this POLISH version of nujabes, CHANGING. PEOPLE'S. LIVES. one song at a time. KONDOR... love this guy's stuff.

gallery stuff and squiggles

so, i'm taking this plein air class right? we're painting the provo tabernacle next to Window Box Gallery, right? One thing led to another, and now we're all in part of this show there, and the opening social will be during the Friday Night Gallery Stroll, December 2, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. you can come if you want. you can also by my picture if you want... cause it'll be for sale. cool huh?

also, for the same class, now that it's getting kinda too cold to be painting outside, we're doing stuff based on some of the studies we did. you''ll notice that part of downtown provo is making a cameo in this one. also, i'm ripping off the white mage a little (kind of a lot actually..) cause i think it would make for a sweet hoodie design.. heh.

also, here are some results from playing "squiggles." squiggles is where you get somebody to make some crazy line on your paper, without the line crossing over itself (because then it becomes a "scribble".. and i wasn't playing "scribbles") and then you turn it into something. i like to add the extra challenge of asking them if they want me to do a human, animal, environment or vehicle... just so i don't go for the easiest solution. pretty fun stuff.

and here's me playing squiggles with myself, where i'll just lightly kinda do some random squiggles/lines without any purpose, until i can see something cool... and then i go for it.

so yeah.. inktober didn't really happen for me.. but i'm okay with that. been trying to juggle homework, work, freelance work, and graduating all at the same time... next year man. next year.

remember Mariachi-Dachi??? well i certainly do. i've now got a solid script in the works (my brother Kyle's been helping me out a lot with it too!!) - almost done actually. got the mariachi band all figured out, the main bad guy, and some side characters. i may put up some of the designs later, but once i start knocking out panels beginning of january, i'll let you in on some sneak peeks before it all gets finished/printed, and i graduate, and disappear from the internet forever, or something like that. or something completely opposite like that. whatevs.

computer died (again...) two and a half weeks and almost $300 later, we're back in business!!

speaking of business, i've been happily doodling at work/school/wherever else i can when i'm stuck in a room with someone else talking, with my weapon of choice (the bic pen.)

speaking of bic pens, did you know that most english speaking countries (including australia) call bics biros?? it's true. turns out some french dude (bich) bought the patent from some hungarian dude (biro - who i believe was moved from his native country to escape religious persecution with his brother) when he saw the pen in argentina, and later started selling them in america.

speaking of... america? it's already 12 days since INKTOBER started.... all over the world actually.
gotta play catch up, and bust out some INK and some TOBER. you'll see... TOMORROW.

they wanted more... cutesy 8-bit stuff, which i definitely tried. but i also thought i'd throw a classic RPG fight kinda thing at them to see if they'd bite. heh..

anyway - always a pleasure to work with K-Murdock and Random. I think we're all like minded enough, at least when it comes to video games, that they trust me to just kinda do my thing - so thanks guys!

so. blog posts. happening more often. see?? i have a plan to start doing this at least weekly, but i'm slowly working my way into it. you'll see. anyways, here's me finally getting around to posting probably the last thing i'll ever do for BYU IS. i haven't been working there for the past 3 months (kinda miss it,) and instead interning over at Avalanche in SLC (learning A LOT, having fun.) more on that later, perhaps. picture time!

did this for the the avalanche blog.. the theme is "cyborg." so i did a "sai-borg." get it?? GET IT!? yeah, i thought you did.

also did this for the avalanche blog.. the theme was "the legend of zelda." been meaning to do a windwaker self-portrait for a couple of years now.. felt good to finally have an excuse to check that off the list.

next up, some 45 min. exercises... got others sitting on my computer that i got a little carried away with. those might show up later. they might not. i'm not too good at keeping blog promises that aren't related to BATTLECATTLE.

did this as a warm-up.. somehow a conversation i was having was about lightning unicorns. wish i could remember why.. heh.

i was given the words "crossbow" and "vespa." this is what i came up with.

had to do a gesture (as finished as i wanted) showing as much force as possible. based off the photo below from that pixel lovely site.

ALSO - i recently watched a short (15 min) film about eagles turning people into horses. simply one of the best horror-action-romantic-comedy-eagle-horse films to date. seriously. it's pretty good.

Mariachi-Dachi, and BATTLECATTLE

so. i took this ridiculously sweet comic book appreciation class taught by Jared Greenleaf. i swear he was like Morpheus, chucking red pills all over the place.. GOOD stuff. can't get enough of it now..

here's a style test for a potential 10pg short story comic (for my BFA project) of a Mariachi Band stuck in Ancient Japan.
i already have 6 pages roughed out, and almost ready to ink/color... just need to do some more research and development stuff..

for the moment, i'm calling it "Mariachi-Dachi."

next up is what i promised to show last post.. the more i think/talk about this, the more excited i get (even toying with the idea of doing this first instead of Mariachi-Dachi.)

SO. what do you get when you throw extraterrestrial encounters, forged WEAPONS, and irritable livestock together with a dash of He-man, and a LARGE helping of REVENGE?? there's only one possible answer, and that answer is BATTLECATTLE.

*edit - i googled "battlecattle" the other night, and found out that a card game already exists with the same name (though it has a space between "battle" and "cattle") and the vision and content is COMPLETELY different. on this site
they even use the text "moo-ve" written and hyphenated like i did in my background.. i honestly thought i had been copied, and freaked out for a second. haha... obviously they have a WEBSITE, and didn't create all the content they have over night. that would just be ridiculous. just figured i'd document this, so nobody thinks i'm ripping THEM off. i honestly had never heard of the card game before.

BATTLECATTLE came from an inability i had trying to design this cow, shown in this post
to get the juices flowing and expel my frustration, i just started sketching hardcore cow stuff - and battlecattle was born. also, Stephanie saw/named the sketch the same day i drew it, and i thought the name was just too awesome to pass up.

also, here's a good 20pg sketch dump from my 60pg sketch book i did while taking Ryan Woodward's most excellent gesture drawing class. things got kind of tricky with a couple weeks left of class, since i was offered (and TOOK) an internship opportunity with Disney Interactive/Avalanche studios as a concept artist (started June 1st). Too many awesome guys over there... LOTS to learn, and having FUN!

so yeah. here's some of my favorites that i'm thinking about painting up or something..

so there you go. more stuff on the way.
also, you guys prefer daily updates? or rather prefer me doing nothing for MONTHS and then sporadically dump pictures into the blog? or some kind of balance in between? it's easy for me to get frustrated with doods i'm stalking online when they don't update stuff, so i thought i'd check in with a you guys and get some feedback. (leaning towards a daily or weekly thing myself..)

these were my favorites from a scottish family history course i did. already posted the course cover in this post.

stuff's changed, and now we no longer put the lesson titles and all that good stuff in our images (except course covers, hurray!!)... which is cool... but i kinda still miss it. anyways, here's some of my favorites of this leadership psychology course. ended up liking quite a few... heh.

and i should do a little back story with the follwoing two images: originally, i thought it would be cool if a bunch of people at an office were pretending to be in Lord of the Rings-esque situations using office supplies and stuff to display leadership. an example below is what i had in mind.

i had all sorts of stuff planned out, with like, camping out in the cafeteria... battling the copy machine, and stuff.. and mind you, all this epic LOTR stuff would be happening in their imagination. the idea was enjoyed by all.... and then the instructor who teaches the course shot it down. so i had to tone everything down, but it was still lots of fun coming up with other solutions..

stay tuned for the BOWLING COURSE i just did. only satisfied with like, 2 or 3 images, so that's all you'll get outta me.

also making an appearance in my next post will be................ BATTLECATTLE. seriously, BATTLECATTLE! i scanned him, he's on my computer, and soon. SOON, you shall see him in all his battle cattle GLORY!!! i'm so excited, i don't even care if you're not. the end.

1. Outside of school and your comics, have you written any fiction or non-fiction? Do you like to read prose fiction or non-fiction?

I've written down lots of ideas/concepts for fiction... maybe a little bit of non-fiction. I'd have to look, but it’s mostly fiction.

Prose fiction is usually where it's at for me, but I've read some pretty sweet non-fiction as well.

2. Would you say you have a good awareness of the history of American comics?

Sort of. I know a few of the major players, and am somewhat familiar with style changes and history, but when it comes down to it - not really.

3. Off the top of your head, could you name 5 artists who worked in comics before 1980? Do you have a favorite?

I could probably, but it’s kinda hard... I’m quite partial to Winsor McKay(sp?) only because I played the NES videogame based on his comic growing up (Little Nemo: Dream Master)

4. Could you name 5 artists who work or worked in newspaper comics?

Nope, but I could totally name a bunch of newspaper comics I like.

5. Could you name any contemporary cartoonists from Europe? Do you have a favorite?

A few. Fabian Schlaga is my favorite.. he’s mostly been a colorist on more indie-type stuff, but he’s one of my favorites.

6. Could you name any contemporary manga artists from Japan? Do you have a favorite?

Totally can. My favorite at the moment is between Eichira Oda and Masashi Kishimoto.. (this is excluding Akira Toriyama, even though I think he’s recently done some work)

7. Do you read European comics?

Mmmmm... not really. I know OF European comics, and comic people who are European, and am familiar with some of their work, but don't really read any of it. Sorry European comics.

8. Do you read any manga?

I used too... I’ve been meaning to catch up on Naruto for about a year.

9. Do you regularly draw in a sketchbook or write in a journal?

Yes on the sketchbook, no on the journal. I mostly just take quick notes off and on instead, but I guess that still counts as a journal… so yes on that too, sorta.

10. Would you say you have a good working ability to drawing with brush and ink? If so, how long have you used a brush? What types?

I would. I started playing with watercolors in high school, and once I came to BYU I was able to experiment with bristle and synthetic brushes for oil, acrylic, and gouache. I’ve started to experiment more with niji, and pentel brush pens just because they seem more practical to me.

11. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get comics news?

Word of finger from professionals I blog-stalk, and follow through deviantart.

12. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get news of current events?

I don't. Occasionally I'll run into current events accidentally through hap-hazard internet surfing. Sometimes I'll feel guilty about how ignorant I am of current events, and will then browse the links provided by my firefox internet browser.

13. Do you go to comic book conventions or festivals? If so--which ones?

Nope. I was planning to go to the San Diego comic con not too long ago, but I let some things (school) get in the way.

14. Have you ever sat through a portfolio review with a professional editor? If so, could you briefly sum up their message for you?

I’m pretty sure I haven’t.

15. Have you ever had your work published? If so, where?

Yes. A highschool newspaper, The Daily Chronicle, Deadmen Tell No Tales (issue3,) Forever Famicom album cover. I think that’s it.

16. How long have you been drawing?

Since before I started kindergarten.

17. Do you like to go to museums? Do you have any favorite "fine" artists, either living or dead? Film directors?

I like going to cool museums... Can’t think of any “fine” artists off the top of my head that I’m really into, but I definitely appreciate cool fine art when I see it. Favorite film directors = Stephen Chow, Guy Ritchie, Guillermo del Toro, and a few others I can’t think of at the moment.

18. Would you think it could be useful or beneficial to watch a film or films as a group and discuss it afterwards as it may relate to comics? Do you have a recommendation for such a film?

I would. Comics influence movies, movies influence comics. It makes sense. I also think there's a lot of similar story telling devices they both share. I don’t have any specific recommendations, but it might be interesting to watch clips of films that were based on comics and analyze if/why they were successful or not.

19. What ethnographic background do you have and how confident are you in acting as an expert of resource of that background?

I grew up in a predominantly white suburban residential area in South Jordan, Utah, so I like to think I’m somewhat of an expert on that kind of background. I also served a mission in the north of France and southern Belgium, so I’m a little familiar with the cultures going on over there among other things.

20. What comic or book or movie have you read/seen at least 5 times? And 10 times?

5 = (comic) Sharknife, Peng! (book)Maniac Magee (movie)Scott Pilgrim, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Kung Fu Panda, Time Bandits, Goonies, The Last Starfighter, the first live-action ninja turtle’s movie, Home Alone… I think I’ll stop there.

10=(comic) Dragonball, Naruto, Hellboy (book)ummm… don’t think I’ve got any (movie)ummm… probably Monty Python and the Holy Grail (after so many sleepovers, it adds up), and maybe Shaolin Soccer.

i should have drawn a picture of Jack squatting, just as a special tribute for that idiom.. but i digress.

HERE is a bunch of concept art i've been doing in a sweet class, taught by the one and only Jake Parker (who also happens to be THE man, and all around awesome drawer of stuff) where we're basically redesigning Jack and The Beanstalk. We have a huge list of characters, props, environments, story moments and stuff that we choose from, and take them all through quick passes to final.

so WATCH as the quality of these designs go from better to worse, as i am posting them grouped, but in reverse chronological order. lots of fun.

first up, Jack. prop is one of the Giant's butter-knives i thought would be cool for him to use as a huge sword.

long time no post. been drawing lots and stuff though. promise.
in no particular order, here are some pictures - most of which are based on true events that have actually happened in real life. really.

yes. i actually road a gorilla, and his name is solomon. unfortunately in real life, solomon is currently impaled by a long metal poll that keeps him forever moving in a counter-clockwise circle along with other helpless and equally impaled creatures from the animal kingdom.

the tentacles were originally going to be arrows... somehow, something went horribly awesome.

i saw two people on a scooter once. it sort of looked like this.

i saw somebody underneath a tree once. i also so a cooler looking tree earlier that day, and put them under that one instead

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...... it's been a couple months.
time for pictures!!

(above) picture was an assignment/attempt to re-do/awesome-ify an OLD picture (below) done my last year in highschool?? still got some things to add in there, but i think it's going somewhere.. heh. really just trying to get the feeling of adventure there and stuff.. hope to get a lot more done on this before we turn EVERYTHING in.

also.. i was thinking of having somebody do a stage-dive in the back where all the light is, but make it look like they're ascending towards the heavens... though that seems so unnecessarily epic and AWESOME, that i may just do a separate painting for that. hahah.. so epic.

also.. i found a ten dollar bill on the ground in a parking lot a couple days ago, and am now just barely coming off of the good luck high. i was having such a lucky day, that by the time i picked up the ten dollar bill i was almost worried/confused how everything was going so well. i literally just stood there in the parking lot for about 5 minutes, just waiting for a voice of reason to come and explain everything to me. . . heh.

also.. K-Murdock and Mega-Ran released another goodie, to thank all the peeps who successfully helped destroy the goal on their epic kickstarter campaign they did this track aptly titled "thank you for listening." samples from Mario 3 - hence my little spin off the title screen for the single's cover art. love this - very chill vibe, yet emotionally penetrating at the same time. check it out.

had to paint this guy using only one color.. fun little exercise in the digital painting class i'm taking right one. black and white version below, obviously - unless you're absolutely blind to all color, then the illusion is lost, and they should both look exactly the same.

been experimenting with not relying so much on lines to describe form, etc. instead of the usual stuff i love to do. more of both to come.

slow day at work.. started doodling to keep the sanity/not fall asleep. couple days later, enter THE DUCKDRAGON.

THE DUCKDRAGON feeds exclusively on ducks during migrational periods.
the ducks' real reason for the flying-v formation is that it's a defensive formation designed specifically to give them the best chance at survival vs. THE DUCKDRAGON. that is all we know so far.

this was for the cover of an english course based on the book "Enchantress of the Stars" which turned out to have a pretty cool concept that helps you better perceive time and space and all that. i should read real books more often. . . ...

another random thing started at work just to fight off sleep, and keep the motivational juices flowing.. to me, little dude sorta looks like a weird mix between a black mage, an eskimo, and kenny.

this was for some random... Scott Pilgrim drawing contest. the comic had a lot of 'your mom' jokes in it, so i thought i'd do one of my own. Mom - if you're reading this, this totally isn't you. promise.
also. The MOVIE was AWESOME.

summary (since i don't feel i need to bore you with every detail of my life at this point..) of random thoughts/observations over the past couple months since the last post, that i can remember off the top of the headt:

-over the summer, i did a lot of walking around outside during the day. listening to music and drawing stuff while outside = very relaxing. may do it some more.

-saw a little bird with a messed up wing. i only noticed because it let me get so close to it without flying away... then i realized it couldn't fly at all. the same day i was walking across a bridge and saw a homeless dude with his shirt off, chilling underneath a huge tree who's branches and leaves almost draped down over him like a huge curtain... made me think about the bird. made me think about what our 'wings' could be, and how messing those up can get us into some really unnatural situations.

-the ability to 'let go' of something good suggests that both 'good' and bad are moving. to hold on to any good thing in your life simply means to move with it and accept the direction it is moving.

-it's almost ridiculous how much music is really out there, is being made, and will be made.. it's impossible to find all of the good music out there, and not worth the effort to try. however, if you don't make any effort to pursue any good music - you wont have any. support good music and it will support you.

other random things worthy of note:
-went to a really cool costume party, and we all played glow-in-the-dark wiffle ball.
-Mario was on my team
-saw a car half-way in an apartment building/half-way out (they drove INTO the building on accident)
-someone was actually HIT BY THE CAR!! imagine that. you're just relaxing... doing stuff in your house, where you LIVE... and then suddenly... YOU GET HIT BY A CAR... crazy. sorta reminded me of Donnie Darko, except i'm not so sure the person who was hit by the car was hit by choice, resulting in the preservation and stability of the world in which we live.. or something like that.

alright. that's about it for now..
last thing. i was driving home sorta late a few nights ago, and caught the last minute or so of this song on the radio... loved the mood/lyrics.. all that. kinda funny how you can never really choose the exact time or source of inspiration, but it hit me. a nice extra little shove in a positive direction.

first off, here's some bonus art for the Forever Famicom bonus content. Forever Famicom DLC is basically 22 tracks - 3 songs that didn't make it onto the original album, and loads of solid instrumentals. so good...
since the original cover art takes place at night, i figured i'd flip it to the day time and eventually even unplugged everything.. or at least that's the concept behind it.

now, for some reason i don't think i've ever put stuff up here from my "real" job (making pretty pictures to go with course content made by BYU Independent Study) but i finally had a good excuse to draw a sword finally, and had to share!! heh..

and here's a super huge version, if you wanna get in and look at stuff a little closer for some reason..

now.. for a little context to set you up for the next thing - i got this task at work for a student development course, which said exactly the following: "I want to try for something that encompasses an Ivy League type prep school in the digital age (near future/online technology fused with traditional East-coast prep school images with a touch of Harry Potter gothic thrown in. I know that's a lot - but I'd like to try for something with that look and feel."

so anyways, here's the course cover - or as we say in the biz, the "splash."
aaaaand some "banners" you'd see going from lesson to lesson..alright. now that you're all caught up, here's where this next picture comes in - one day i came to work with my glasses on, started working on the "harry potter" course... and this girl, i mean.. she who should not be named decided to draw a lightning bolt scar-thing on my forehead.. pictures were taken.. i even pretended to cast a spell at someone with my stylist... ANYWAYS. for some presentation our little art production department did for the rest of the BYU independent study production people, one of the pictures we used as a slide was from that, plus a little photoshop magic on my part...

and while i'm posting stuff about work, just for fun here's some stuff i did for an Aerobics course that i'm sorta proud of.. especially the one with the Nintendo Wii... heh heh..

done for another random drawing contest.. kind of thought the judging was a little ridiculous, not just because i didn't make the semi-finals, but other cool kids didn't either. whatever - still had lots of fun doing this!

a doodle. i've never considered myself very strong at "sketching" for lots of personal reasons... but DOODLING is insanely fun, and somehow "works" for me. doodling vs. sketching.... is there really a difference? maybe doodling is like super slow-motion sketching.. i dunno.

so... LOTS of stuff piling up that i wanna play with in photoshop.. don't know when i'll get around to it, so this is just a mini sketch dump of some of that stuff.

finally got some of my figure drawing class stuff on the computer. all of these are self-portraits except the last one.

other noteworthy stuff... kind of:
-went to a pretzel making party. apparently some people are really into pretzel making? i'm really into eating freshly baked goods such as pretzels, so that was a relief.
-cant stop listening to an AWESOME Michael Jackson remix by Beatnick & K-Salaam
-had 3 songs on repeat CONSTANTLY, even at work... i guess i was in a weird mood or something and it just seemed to help. finally snapped out of it after about day 5.

Forever Famicom!!

so... Forever Famicom drops June 1st!! it was a really fun opportunity to get to do all the art stuff for this project - i mean, nintendo makes up a special part of my childhood... with all the fighting/bonding me and my brothers had, and all the adventures we got through. on top of that, i'm a huge fan of what K-Murdock and Mega-Ran are up to - both in co-op, as well as in their own respective single player games. definitely two guys worth keeping an eye on in the music world.

i figured i'd post all the art without the logo (which logo design i'm actually really proud of.. heh,) the type, and whatever else over here. to check out the more "official" stuff, head over to K-Murdock's, and while you're at it you can even preview the tracks over at Mega-Ran's. if you're really feeling it, you can pre-order the album from either sites, and come June 1st you'll be able to check the whole thing out at their bandcamp page.

the album does not disappoint - i got a piece of the audio action early on, and it does NOT disappoint. literally had the whole thing on repeat for a week.. haha.. seriously. these are just two awesomely creative guys with some really cool friends making great hip hop, with powerful allies of nostalgia, nintendo, and nerd core glory furthering their heroic musical campaign.

while on the subject of nerd core, i discovered "The Chrono Mixtape" a while back, and to my strange surprise.. some dude (DJ Nerd42) took the instrumentals, and FLAWLESSLY puts the vocals from that fort minor album over the top.. it's like........ so weird how well it works.. haha.. Chrono Tied - check it out if you dare.

and lastly, something a little different.

this is "Gob." ...short for Goby. you know, like the desert? but more like the fish with the awesome underbite that forms symbiotic relationships with the tiger pistol shrimp. real, REAL name is "Goblin." ....or Gobble. heh.. more on that later.

anyways. this guy's sort of like, the main character from a story i've had in my head for a while now.. the plan is to get him and all his friends and everything out of my head, on to paper, and watch it all magically transform into a graphic novel.

not much else going on. life is still life, good is still great, bad is still worse, using Wal-Mart's shopping carts like a giant scooter to my car intentionally parked ALL the way at the opposite end of the parking lot (for obvious reasons) is still REALLY fun.. can't complain about anything, really.

PACMAN!

last semester, during an intermediate computer apps class (photoshop/illustrator) our instructor had us try and contact people who were making awesome stuff digitally. the idea was that we'd all come back and share everything in class, exposing each other to awesomeness and learning at the same time - i figured, who else to try and contact and share stuff about than the legendary PACMAN!!

i'm not talking about the yellow dude who's got a penchant for devouring disembodied spirits and little dots around tight corners and mazes, who also recently made a cameo appearance on google.. i mean THIS PACMAN.

this guy has always stood out to me and is one of my favorites, because of his ridiculously awesome and creative sketches, among other mighty abilities he wields in the name of art. check out his website, his blog, or his deviantART. i'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

anyways, the man was awesome enough to get back to me and respond to some interview questions - i tried to refrain from geeking out too hardcore, and smothering the dude with random questions, and keep it oriented towards the class i was taking. here it is for your reading pleasure:

-How/When did you first get serious about creating art?
I always knew that I wanted to do something with art but it wasn't until high school that I
started to get recognition for what I was doing so I decided to pursue art as a career.

-Do you have any "art heroes" out there at the moment who get you pumped to draw and create? who and why?

Yes, there are a few artists that I "stalk" online all the time. James Jean's skill level and subject matter is amazing and always gets the creative juices flowing. Jeff Soto and Tomer Hanuka are always inspiring as well.

-I love seeing people like MF Doom, Fat Jon, and that really fluid graffiti-esque flow show up in your scribbles and doodles. Would it be safe to assume that the whole Hip Hop movement has a strong affect on your style and/or your subject matter? What are some things that you'd say have the strongest influence on your style, and what you like to doodle in general?

Yes, music has been a very strong influence in my art. I'm usually listening to music whenever I'm drawing something and it's taken from whatever is playing at the moment, from the underground hip hop scene to indie rock. I never really did graffiti but was more into the characters than the actual lettering. I'm usually drawing stuff that appeals to me, from robots to pandas to tattooed girls.

-You seem to have a really good balance between great line quality, and awesome rendering. I see you pushing stuff both ways. From pieces with strong graphic design elements, to a more rendered and modeled look, and also achieving interesting and fun results inbetween from mixing the two. Could you tell me (as much as you want) about your process - getting your line quality, rendering, use of texture?

I begin by sketching something out very rough, then using a light table to trace my lines. Or I scan the rough sketch and draw it digitally. Once I get the line art the way that I want, I start with the colors. I leave a lot of open lines because I like doing a lot of detailing in the coloring stage of the piece. As far as combining graphic design elements, it's just about adding a little extra 'oomph' to the image. If it's too boring, then it needs something that compliments the drawing without overpowering the entire piece.

-Could you walk me through the basics of what you do to take something from an idea to a finished product? (I feel like this question seems sort of repetitive of the previous one, but I mean, just an overview of how you work from start to finish - without going into the specific details of the linework, etc, if that makes sense.)

If I hear a song that I think would make a cool drawing, I start sketching something out in my head. Once I get a nice composition and subject matter, I try putting that down on paper and
take it from there. It's a lot of trial and error and sometimes the final image ends up looking completely different than what I had first imagined.

-How much would you say your traditional foundation plays a part in what you're able to do digitally?

It helps a lot. Working digitally is just a tool. Many people think that just because it was done on a computer, it must be easier. It's not as easy as it seems, it's taken me years to learn how to fully take advantage of what you can do digitally.

-Are there any weaknesses you see to doing things digitally, or things that you try not lose from your traditional work?

Definitely. There are certain strokes in your line art that won't ever mimic what a pencil can do. I also think that pencil drawings are a lot easier to manipulate than drawing digitally. The 'undo' option is the best thing from a digital standpoint as I'm sure there are many artists who say, "Where's my undo button?" while working in traditional media.

-Since you've started working digitally, have you seen your style change progressively in any ways?

Yes, while I'm drawing something I'm already thinking of how I'm going to color it. So there are certain things I leave out which I wouldn't have left out before. It's as if my line art has gotten simpler but at the same time my coloring has gotten stronger.

-What advice would you like to pass on to anyone at novice or intermediate

levels attempting to strenghten their digital craft?
Practice as much as you can. I started using Photoshop when I was 13 years old. Just playing around getting to know the program. Once you know what the program can do, the possibilities are endless. There are even different ways to get the same result. Look for online tutorials if you're stuck, as you'll learn something new that would then develop into your own personal technique.

-Any advice you'd like to pass on to somebody just trying to "get themselves out there" more, for freelance opportunities, comics, toys, ANYTHING, from your experience - I just want to help create and promote all things awesome and positive through any creative powers I happen to possess!

I started an online gallery on deviantart.com around 7 years ago while looking for an art community to post my drawings. Through other artists on that site, I found out about art forums and art battles. I took part in that for years and people started taking notice of me. Once you've posted enough around these art circles, other artists will start recognizing your stuff. It's a great feeling. Go to comic book conventions and rent a table to sell your art. It's great exposure. Open your own website as well, as it will show whoever is looking for an artist that you have your own portfolio and it speaks volumes to the client.

-Finally, are there any shout outs, current/future projects out there you're working on you can talk about, or anything else that you recommend us keep an eye out for?
There will be a few of my tutorials published on a couple of issues of Digital Artist magazine coming out in the next couple of months. And if you ever fly on Virgin America Airlines, take a look at my illustrations on the safety manual :]

remember "Tim" ??? i do. originally, this comic started about 6 or 7 years ago when i was on newspaperstaff in highschool. the idea behind his name was to have something generic, but unique enough to almost stand out. if your name happens to be Tim, i'll never apologize to you. ever. him and his best friend Ikkabod (nickname "Ikk") were bascially just weird kids that did strange things, or had strange things happen to them. good times.. heh.

special shout-out to Craig who was also another notable creative writing power behind 'Tim," though i've forgotten the specifics of all your contributions - however undeniably important and good they were.

dug one of my favs outta the closet and finally got it onto the computer. may digitally remaster it just for fun. may even find the others and put 'em up.

dunno. was drawing kids in my class while we were on a field trip at Jim Christensen's place. this is what came out of it. (been forEVER since i've been on a field trip.. i should've called my Mom up and asked her to pack me a lunch with a caprisun just to make it that much more legit.. heh.)

got an assignment to redo Alice in Wonderland, 16 rough pages. my take was sort of about this girl trying to fit in with all the weird "genres" of people in Wonderland. i'll post all the pages up sometime, but for now you only get the one page that's colored. oh, and the Mad Hatter is supposed to be Ozzy Osbourne.

assignment - do something in photoshop for Haïti (back when it was only them who had been rocked by serious seismic activity). the idea was to sell all our Haïti posters through the internet, and donate all the skrilla to charity for the Haïti peeps.

assigment - do an environmental design for anything. finally forced myself to go more speed-painty on this one, and try techniques out i don't normally use in photosohp. actually really pleased with the result.

assignment - illustrate a fortune cookie, all in adobe illustrator.

not gonna lie though - i did some slight tweaking in photoshop.

"William Noe Livingston, 1835-1909"
got lots of leeway in a family history class i was taking, for a final project. decided to draw an ancestor. this guy here is my grandma's great great grandpa. all i found for a physical description to go off of was that he had blue eyes and wavy brown hair.

random side story: two years before he got married - his wife and her family were all eating breakfast one morning, when suddenly her dad (who apparently had been acting a little strange for the past couple days) just gets up from the table without saying a word, goes into the next room, and blasts himself in the face with a rifle. apparently your family history can be pretty intense.. heh.

acrylic paints...assignment - use cliché images (like the heart shape, or fluffy clouds, or whatever) and do/say/create something different or new or creative or whatever with them... or something like that.

assignment - redesign a fruit, pasta, or cupcake.

assignment - take an abstract word (from a list they handed out) and do something conceptual with it. i picked "invisible."

assignment - pick and illustrate an article (from a bunch that they gave us to choose from.)
mine was on hitmen acting as informants to the FBI, who were trying to get after the Mafia - and in turn, cops would look the other way while these guys started stealing/killing/taking over Mafia guys' stuff.

assignment - another article illustration like the last one, except this one was about "nintendo thumbs" from people playing videogames "too much". they don't know what they're talking about - my thumbs are just fine, and i've played WAAAAAY too much.

assignmment - another article thing. this one was about a study that was done on how good smells influence you to be a good person, while nasty smells make you more negative.

WOW... that was a lot.
gotta be a record post for me or something.

and now here's where i go off into an unrelated part of my life that has recently ocurred that i feel like sharing for no particular reason:

i HATE cops. okay... not really(skip to 5:43,) but i hate unreasonable laws being enforced unreasonably.
i was off skateboarding last week just to relax... might've only done like 4 miles or something like that, and i'm almost back to my apartment. there's this HUGE empty parking lot with only a few cars on both ends, and i start cutting through, since the road to my house is on the other side. not even halfway through, some cop sticks his head out of his green non-cop-esque secret covert-op camo-cop car and motions for me to come over.
tells me there's no skating on campus. well, i'm not ON campus. apparently campus consists of anything the university owns, including this effing huge/effing EMPTY parking lot almost right next to where i live. i tell him i'm aware there's no skating OR biking on campus, and ask him what would happen if i decided to cut through the parking lot on a bike - and not to sound like i'm just giving him crap, i let him know i'm just trying to understand, because it's true.
apparently this issue has gone through the legal system for years, because some junior high kids were on the university's campus (real campus, not weird stuff they own from afar) one night, and one kid got a serious head injury from being stupid. i think there was an attempted lawsuit, and cop guy says somehow if somebody's injured on campus, the university can be liable - so a bunch of, i'm assuming spiteful people, decided that skateboards, rollerblades, "razors" (now my cop buddy starts bringin' in the "street terms." heh heh..) and anything else that doesn't have a break (even though all these things actually do) isn't allowed because of control issues and potential liabilty that this can cause the university due to accidents.
dood let me off with a warning, but if i was caught again he said he'd have to shoot me in my left knee cap or something. we had a good laugh.... and then i killed him and tried to hide the body underneath my wheels, again.... and again.... and again. hahaha.... yeah.
but seriously, got me thinking later that day - i saw some ten year old kids off a-scootering in the direction of the now foreboding parking lot. is a cop gonna stop KIDS from scootering through? give them tickets? oh, and what if i'm in a car and accidentally or intentionally run somebody over in the parking lot. this thing has breaks, PERFECT balance. all i have to do is sit down, and no worries about the thing falling over - who's liable then?? i don't know if it's just me, but if i run somebody over, or i eat concrete with my face off a bike or a skateboard, or get my neck tangled around my scooter, i'm pretty sure it's my own fault - especially if it's in a huge empty flat space where almost zero cars park.
i'm not complainin' - i'm just sayin'
here's an idea - let me sign a WAIVER or something. problem solved.
no big deal.

on a more positive note, i went on a really long walk the next day, and discovered some kid playing Lord of the Rings music with an accordion on his porch. it was awesome. day was totally transformed into awesome, instantly.

anywho, first day of spring semester starts tomorrow?!
i'm expecting really exciting stuff to happen this summer, but somehow i don't foresee this as being part of that. should be fun though.

The Bear and the Two Travelers

"Two men were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."

got to do one of Aesop's fables for a school assignment. for those of you who are within walking distance of BYU's library, you can see it hanging up on the same floor as the family history place. so down one floor, take a right, go straight til you hit a wall - and go right again, only make sure to watch out for the wall this time. and it's that hallway. this monster is 11x17, all matted, framed and all that.

for those of you who are unsuccessful at reading/following directions, aren't within walking distance, or just don't care - there's a little plaque next to my picture that is supposed to read as follows:

"In the beginning of this fable, Aesop doesn't use the word "friend" to describe the two guys who are traveling together. We don't know where they're traveling, or why. We don't even care. . . or at least I don't. What I do care about is how their relationship is defined after the bear encounter. They didn't have any weapons, anti-bear devices of any kind, or any Chuck Norris that we're aware of. The only thing we know they did have was each other.

Everybody's got a friend. Maybe you've got a friend who just so happens to be a BEAR who likes to mess with people, and at the same time possesses the unnatural ability to communicate perfectly with humans through speech. Maybe your friends just suck. No matter what happens, they're your friend. Deal with it." - my interpretation of what the moral to the fable is.

that's about it for now. got lots of other random stuff coming, once i'm no longer busy fending off the icy grip of suck known as school.

finally saw sherlock holmes. t'was indeed EFFIN' AWESOME.
lastly, OC Remix came out with another album not too long ago i've had on repeat for a few weeks straight. it's called Serious Monkey Business. DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2!!!!!!!!!!! already one of the best soundtracks ever, and now we've got some seriously rad remixes (i tried to avoid the aliteration there... but i didn't, and i'm coming off to myself as really corny, but whateva.) Bramble Reprise is probably my favorite. ATLEAST top 5. check it out.

did somebody say update? . . . no? . . . .interesting.
so, i've got a quick update. last couple weeks and more have been some of the busiest weeks of my life for some strange reason - and to show you some evidence to discredit this undeniable truth... sketches!! some to be "digitally remastered," some to be left almost forgotten in the abyss of the wake known as personal experience.

shooting the curl, or gleaming the cube as some might say...

making faces. when i've got nothing better in mind to draw, i'll do these huge face collage things... it's fun. i like to make up stories for how they'd interact with eachother, or why they're feeling what they're feeling, in relation to the other faces or people.

sketching some kids at school - it was one of those "older kids hang with way younger kids on a field trip" type thing.

G'liath.
was really feeling this one.. this little guy will probably go into my huge archive of original characters who i've made up a small story around etc., and should draw more of, but odds are i never will. shame on me.

Bram Stroker's Dracula was on tv, and then this happened somehow..
honestly don't understand how many "actors" ended up in the same poorly written movie.. and super weirded out at Keanu's enlgish accent - or lack there of... WOW. it's like he thought he'd sound more english accent-y if he just randomly captain kirk-style paused through half of his sentences.... hahahaha... that movie was awful.

made some random scribbles that turned into a girl, that turned into a gorrilaz-esque girl, that turned into a v-day related thing... i had this idea of making a black hole in space, in the shape of a heart as a tribute to v-day, but don't know when i'll have the time for that - for now, this'll do i guess.

As a christmas act of goodwill, i had this random contest on deviantart the morning of christmas where the first two people to respond with a link to their linework, i'd throw some colors at it.

long story short, i was giving a band another option for an album cover in the spirit of music, and indian folklore perhaps, to try and help some friends feel better or something. done in an hour? can't remember. super last minute, super don't care, even though they decided not to go with this. it has this eerie... strange charm to me, enough that i thought i'd share it.

kay, so i was digging through old old sketchbooks from way back. found 'the red one.' the red one is the best sketchbook i've ever had - senior year of highschool, '04, i would take this EVERYWHERE, and draw in it ALL THE TIME. soooo satisfying. you can see the spot where all the red has vanished due to the prolonged magical grip one would employ as it was carried to various locations of drawing.

i'll be posting a few drawings from it every so often, till i've got all my favorites on the computer.. really wanna do some paint over stuff with all this, digitally. we'll see.

i remember trying to figure out how to make building and fudge perspective, so i could do what i wanted. these were the last two serious attempts i did, and it's been a while since then.... totally need to do more stuff like this. sepia tone-gradient thing was thrown on a few days ago, just to add a little something something to it all..

in this next one, you can spot the following: a person asleep in a car. a large pop can, an abstract kitchen sink, a mario building, and one of my most favorite inventions of all time - the 'no handi-capped parking allowed' parking spot.

Final Fight: Double Impact

not "Double Impact" as in the movie where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays two twins separated at birth, which had super parody potential by "Twin Dragons"... sadly that didn't happen, and both movies sucked. and sadly, i'd watch either one of them without question if they were on tv... haha..

ANYWAYS. i'm talking about Final Fight - this epic beat 'em up game our legendary babysitter would bring over when i was super little. My favorite guy was Cody, and I'd always get really excited whenever we'd find a lead pipe or a sword to beat people up with. around 17-19 years later in real life, i still get pretty exicted whenever i find a lead pipe or sword laying around to aid me in beating up the local street thugs preventing me from getting to the next screen i'm walking towards in an unchanging 2-dimensial straight line.

Capcom was having a coloring contest i decided to enter at the last second, did everything the day of the deadline as usual, thus rushing overall quality of my entry, and not getting to try everything i wanted to do. if i win, my colors go on the cover of the box, plus some other stuff, and i get to look at all the entries which were WAY better than mine - thus giving me a great learning experience as well. if i lose, i still get that great learning experience by seeing all the entries that were WAY better than mine, but i also get the wonderful bonus package of absolutely NOTHING at all!! totally exicted.

so here's my entry - please excuse the more slutty aspects of a couple of the characters. i didn't draw them. other than that - the rest of this drawing seriously awesome, as it should be.

was doing some head studies for a figure drawing class, and ran into this cool portrait. i just HAD to draw it! and now it's colored thanks to a most awesome and a most needed Christmas break.

on another slightly related note, i went skateboarding a little over 5 miles today. i probably should've gone running instead so my legs could get an even workout, but i'm just having waaaay to much fun with the skateboard as of late.

also, saw that blindside movie today. real life is awesome - when true stories of good people get out there like that, the goodness and reality of it magnifies how pathetic some of the more hollywood-esque type stuff out there really is..

printed this guy out and turned him in for my narrative illustration final - obviously it was supposed to be on Richard III. if only ALL my finals were this easy and enjoyable.

on a somewhat unrelated note, i took my roommate to wal-mart - and since he takes forEVER to shop, i told him to meet me in the electronics section when he was done. while i was carrying out my pre-meditated monopoly of the new super mario bros. for the wii, in the electronics section - i must have sold at least 3 or 4 copies to people as they were walking by. haha...

got all the way to world 2, killed two bosses, and all this without dying once. the whole time, there was this little kid who was watching, asking me all sorts of questions and making random comments about his 'star wars clone wars' game. thus his education began of the finer points of nintendo history - as he was unable to identify 'that wizard guy' and by my mentioning 'super nintendo' it's as if i had constructed verbal stealth technology which i was then able to attach to each one of my words which then shot past his comprehension/hearing radar, completely undetected. or maybe he was just ignoring me.... haha.

needless to say, i ended the night by using an empty shopping cart as a scooter, and sailed all the way down the parking lot to my car. i do stuff like that.

i've got some other people's stuff i'll be taking a crack at, color-wise - but after finals are FINALLY over by the end of this week. i just hit a nice little gap of time to take an academic break, and drop some pictures.

also, while i was walking to work the other day, i noticed this HUGE family of snowmen, complete with mini-sized snowmen children all huddled together next to some tree.... i decided it was time to send them straight to jack frost's icey cold GRAVE.

roundhoused the mom-snowman's head right off, front kicked the body off - no problems. the dad-snowman however was another story, he being constructed to be atleast 7 feet tall.. side kicks, flying jump kicks, and punches to the body were taking nice chunks out of him.. however, the icey slush guts inside were holding together really tight. finally, i was able to take him down with some elbow strikes. i think i killed most of the children just by tripping, and losing balance whilst a-killing the parents. i left one kid alive, but in the event he developed an unhealthy revenge complex, spending the rest of his life devoted to finding a way to repay the horrid debt i had left him with - i decided to come back and finish the job today.. haha.
explanation needed?? probably not, but it does bring to mind this scene at 2:38

while looking for that scene, i discovered some funny starwars stuff - but by far, the one that takes the cake is the vader sessions. worth a laugh.

heh.. i imagine some strange post-apocolyptic type RPG with people using biker gang summoning abilities, chain swords, and saving their progress at garbage cans turned into make-shift bonfires. this would be a screenshot of you equiping one of the various weapons you find during gameplay.

also, we (as in the Shiseikai Karate club at BYU) got to put on a fun demonstration at UVU the other night as part of their culture night. really fun stuff - i'm hoping to get my hands on a video or something.

other things worthy of note:
-my car died a bunch of times (it appears to be working fine by the grace of God, for the moment) ergo, i've had some good fun skateboarding to school.
-i've made some good friends with the grounds keeper people on campus by walking on the grass, even after they suggested i use the sidewalk instead. name calling insued. according to this passionate and avid supporter of grass, i'm a "moron." i still think it was pretty smart of me to walk on the grass.

made a promise to myself to doing at least 2 Earthbound pictures this year - finally knocked out number 2! sort of a companion piece to this one.

finally got around to finishing one of the many drawings that came out of my Lord of the Rings marathon about a year ago... !
i thought it'd be cool to write my name out using some runes - as it turns out, in real life there are LOOOOTS of different kinds of runes - luckily Tolkien made up his own, so there aren't as many - and i found this cool runic translator thing. check it out.
from all the unnecesarry nerd-like research i did last night, it seems pretty legit.
sometimes i wish i was nerd-core enough that i knew the runic alphabet, but i usually try and keep my contact between hobbits, dwarfs, and other races that don't exist in real life to a minimum.

kay. time for some nasty pictures.. not that nasty, really. but about 4 months ago (jul. 18, 2009) a day that will live in infamy - i was a victim of a drive-by shooting, à la paintball. only one hit me, but it was my drawing hand covering my face..

so, i like to do this thing when i watch movies - basically attempt to draw the entire movie with quick sketches, and then LATER add in details. that way, i can enjoy the movie rather than focus too much on drawing. so. i got into the BFA. very cool - HOWEVER. something cooler - one of my favorite pictures from highschool!! found after sifting through some old crap i dumped out to make room in my big black portfolio thing. i drew this during... "tech lab" i think. about 5 1/2 years ago. i was so bored/apathetic the whole period, i had to get it out of my system - and here we are. since i liked it so much, i thought it deserved a little bit of a face lift. here's the original. sort of a self-portrait - i used to have THE coolest red owen's corning plumbing jacket. and some well made grey pants. both now are broken and don't work anymore, sadly.

also, this cool person that draws invited everybody to join in on a little drawing game. me and my brothers ALWAYS used to do something very similar to this - i don't know how it started, but the end goal was to make the guy look as ugly and gross as possible. still fun to this day. anyways, i joined in on this guy's game - it had been QUITE a while since i'd done any ode to dragonball, so i figure i was due.

also, i found another treasure while cleaning out the portfolio - a 2 year old man!! i don't do stuff like this enough. freshman year at BYU, our apartment received some weird magazine, and so i decided to make use of it.

also, i have a job interview in about 12 hours. very cool.

so, i sketched up this ugly mug i lovingly call "fat face." after some ink and proper color treatment, i was playing around with channels in photoshop, and was kinda shocked how sad and stone cold the dude looked without his fire.

for some reason, it's really fun for me to draw exceptionally fat and grotesque things.. always has been.

slightly related side-note: now that all swelling is down on my left hand (from a drive-by paintball shooting saturday), it looks all yellow and sickly.. pictures will come.

haha... long story short - while coloring this up on the computer, i got the idea to dress it up like a game cover, and while searching for reference material stumbled across some megaman fan-site and also decided to use this as a dirty joke on a bunch of tender hearted, angsty spiteful, unsuspecting nerds. so far the responses have been pretty funny and somewhat rewarding. if the action heats up any more, i'll post a link. but here are some of the highlights thus far:

not much is new.. still hunting for jobs and motivation. HOWEVER, i got me one of them fancy brown recycle paper sketchbooks finally, and on the front it says "earthbound." SO. i was inspired to do something in memory of one of the greatest RPGs ever fabricated by man. EARTHBOUND ! great soundtrack too - go grab some free epic remixes over here.

also, before the Earthbound tribute - i had colored some sketch that's been sitting in one of my other sketchbooks for a while... basically, the idea was based on my belief that our statues are absolutely sissy-looking, and we should make cooler ones - even if that means giving a fake background with memorial plaques, thus enhancing the flavor of our ancient past using historical fallacies... heh.

almost a year ago, i used a tablet for the very first time to color THIS picture. just wanted to try some new ideas/techniques out on some clean lines instead old sketches and doodles, so here we are A YEAR LATER!!!almost. heh... anyways, i'm really happy with the progress i've made. crazy stuff.

also a year later, and i'm still a shameless naruto fan. heh..

in other news, NEVER go running in shorts that are too big for you, it's not worth the effort. the only way to make it is by alternating which hand holds up your shorts, to even out the fatigue in your arms. the things we learn life can be so important sometimes.

so, i finally finished putting some color on another doodle i did at work a year ago... man, i was productive when i was working - these days i have to 'try' to draw rather than use it as an escape mechanism. anywho, here it be:

funny timing with this one, too - while trying to get a 'hot/humid' tone to the picture, i experienced 'heat stroke' for the first time yesterday. i went running with some overcast and a breeze, about 3 and a half or 4 miles out, it all disappeared and the sun decided to start cooking me alive, and i knew it was time to head back. i hadn't had anything to eat/drink either since it was the first thing i did that day. wooooooow.... i was out for the rest of the day with a sick stomach and a nasty headache/small fever. funny thing is it RAINED about 30 min. after i got back.. isn't Utah weather GREAT!!!! seriously though, i like it.

oh, i started putting some of my sketchbook stuff on my computer from this year - here's a page from when i watched "minority report" again for the second time ever. first time was when it came out in.... 2002!? been a while:

yep. me and my roommates of Apartment s206. we had this "quote wall" taped up on our wall, and for a while nobody was writing anything on it, so i figured i'd make use of the blank space and try out my new pit pen thing.

i was originally going to make us all look like we were 60, and had been through 5 world wars or something, but really only did it to myself.
Brett = the pirate, Mike = unhealthy wolverine obsession, Roger = hobbit/cook, Taylor = (dood with the ax) funny story, he actually got a nasty cut later on in the same place i drew a scar across his nose. cool, eh? and Sean = looks pretty much like Legolas, except for his ultra square jaw. oh, and me - i'm like 50 yr old... way of the samurai-ish.. fighting type person.

even though they're all pretty cool, and we had a good time hangin' out for two semesters, I'M SO GLAD I DON'T LIVE WITH YOU GUYS ANYMORE!!! hahaha... i mean, it's good to finally take a break from school for the summer. seriously. oh yeah, and being able to go to the bathroom/shower whenever i want to is awesome. 6 guys + 1 bathroom = inconvenient.

no stories today... it's too late for stories.
i spent 9 hours today playing this addicting game "World of Goo" and i feel little to no regret.

the hoodie ninja returns! i've been wanting to color this for years... literally. basically, around december '04 one day, i was just staring at myself in the mirror wearing a hoodie... and impulsively pulled the drawstrings and tied them behind my head... haha.. after that, i HAD to draw it - and thus the hoodie ninja was born. should probably draw more of this guy..

"My Little Big Planet"

no... not the cool ps3 game, but i just barely finished coloring this doodle i did at work about a year ago. the concept was "what would be the most time consuming thing to keep me entertained and sane while working?" i thought drawing an entire civilization would do the trick, complete with planet. i realized about half way in that it was a little ambitious, and opted out for a more... village-esque thing. fun stuff though. happy to finally get some colors on this one.

a few weeks ago, i colored this picture i drew for a friend and almost forgot to post it. here it be. those are some mission buddies. that's "Frostbeard the Pirate" on the left, and "Chung the Taiwanese Ninja" on the right.

and hey! I finished getting my last two gouache paintings on the computer from my illustration class.

"Fear of Everyone"

assignment: we could choose between 3 articles to paint/illustrate - the one i chose was about social phobia/fear of everyone. fun stuff. originally the character in the bed had huge bug eyes, which the professor supported, but when we had a critique he said "he doesn't look as charming as the others..." and wanted it changed. ummmmmmm.... you know he's supposed to be SCARED.. right? whatever. i'm sure people have had work sent back to them in the real world for reasons more ridiculous than this. no worries.

"The Rainmaker"

assignment: illustrate/paint either "narcissus and echo" or 1956 movie "the rainmaker" as a book cover, using two models (this here is my roommate Roger and his girlfriend, Laila). i liked the story of a con man getting 100 bucks claiming he could make rain, so i ran with that - i'm mostly happy with how everything turned out... except the girl in the back. apparently it sucks painting really, really small. fixing mistakes is a nightmare. good learning experience.

in other news, i made a dog cry last week.
i was out running when some mid-sized dog suddenly appears from out of wherever, and is about to give chase - usually i'm all about the chase, but not today. i instantly decided i was going to punch it right in the forehead. i turn around and yell "get away!" but i had murderous intent in my voice and my tight fist was ready to kill.

whatever it was the dog sensed, he sensed it - and hid behind some fence and started howling and most likely was soiling whoever's lawn he was on. i was going to type "crapping himself sorry" or something, but technically i think one must be wearing pants in order to crap one's self.

just finished coloring this doodle i once did at work. couldn't help the Gandalf quote popping into my head when i was half-way done throwing down some light. heh.. for some reason i've been having a thing for pink clouds and beams of light lately... sorry if your fovea processes this as a tad too psychedellic in color.. i just couldn't help it. maybe it's just a Gandalf thing.

i also found myself coloring this old picture today that i did as a gift for my friend Landon. he cut his hand up pretty hardcore (by hardcore, we're talking like, nerve reattaching, rehabilitation, weird cast thingies and so on) on a katana he found in his basement. so i did two pictures for him since it was pretty close to his birthday, and i'm RIDICULOUSLY cheap when it comes to buying things for people... and basically cheap in general. heh.. anywho, this was part 2, part 1 was more of a fun joke, which can be found here.

OH - i almost forgot! this video was brought to my attention last night, i was literally in tears i was laughing so hard... show your friends! heh... life would be so boring without other people.

i was toying with putting those words on the front of this, to make a fake cover to a comic book - perhaps another day. just finished coloring this picture i doodled during a slow day at work.

speaking of souls, i had a thought the other night. i had this impulsive idea to try and drink some water without letting a drop hit my tongue - just straight down, and into the throat. it's really easy with a water bottle. SO UNSATISFYING.

the more i tried it, the more it felt like i was just filling up a car with gas - very mechanical, just get in and get out. no sensation of taste and yet so close to it. interesting to think how special our bodies are - with out them, you can't really talk to any"body." just so distant from everything. like being in prison, or something. it's gotta be tough being a spirit after this life, not having your body. it's gotta be sorta like drinking water without tasting it, i think. i once had a dream that i was a spirit - just to get from one side of a room to another felt like sprinting for 5 mintues, and not even making it halfway. kinda interesting. . . just think about it.

where it is wetter, where it is better. . . under the sea? well... i guess that depends on how far "under" the sea sebastien was talking about. also, he does a diservice to all his crab-kin for using "under" in such a very ambiguous way just to further his agenda in making us think how great his natural habitat is. i'm sure there are other crabs out there with better intentions, and equipped with a better ability to employ words, such as "under."

colored a doodle last night that's been sitting on the front of one of my notebooks for a while now. just trying weird stuff, and getting better.

i sorta went for a "both" kind of approach. something like that. done in gouache paint..

i once had a turlte... named him "Koopa." after a while it just seemed like the guy refused to eat, and didn't eat for like, 4 months until he died. i REALLY wanted his turtle shell, because that would be a very sweet artifact to possess, and could get kid out of many a tight situation if ever cornered by a goomba, or one of the infamous hammer brothers.

anyways.. i forgot the exact spot where i barried my turtle, and would have to ruin a lot of grass to do it now. no turtle shell as of yet.

moral of the story: eat all your food, or i'll kill you? and stuff your body in a hole behind my house. yeah.... something like that.

yep.. just more color practice. now that's out of the way, it's time for school type stuff...
and also - whatever it is you like to do, check yourself out some parkour and freerunning psychology - just some english kids talking about parkour, but it applies to anything you do, and how you should do it, with cool accents. with that in mind, they've actually got some really cool videos, like this one.

oh. and while we're on the subject, i ran into this video about being creative. interesting stuff:

it's just one of those things that hit me really hard, and not 100% sure why exactly... so i let it hit me about 20 to 30 more times replaying the last sentence over and over, just to make a good impression in the head. good stuff!

only fun thing i've done in my illustration class - assignment was to take a nursery rhyme, and change the context so the meaning changes, basically. i did "Jack Be Nimble." done in gouache paint. it's like watercolor, it just sounds dumber.

SO. another class, another doodle. you know how it goes.
i was thinking about going full color, but then i got the idea to use the blue from the notebook, and go for that "thanks for playing/the end" sorta look that flashes up after the credits when you used to beat games back in the day.

so yeah, to manifest my nintendo nerd-like qualities, this would sorta be for the game "Super Mario FATHER 'n sons" . . . or something weird like that. i've already got a sweet name picked out for the old man, and will probably be doing some more hardcore designs of him in a younger, more hardcore form. i can't believe nintendo hasn't gone there yet. they could call it "Super Mario Origins" or something equally hardcore. as long as it was hardcore.

in other news, my body is slowly yet surely mutating into a fish... or a fish-like...human-like creature. i need to drink water every 3 minutes or my mouth dries up, and i start going into these convlusive fish spasms on the ground.. it'd be more practical at this point to invest in a fish bowl/tank in which i could soak in all the moisture i need, and properly mutate the gills. however, becoming a super-fish-human, i'll finally be able to swim.... AT THE SPEED OF DOLPHIN!!!! that will actually be the newly coined catch-phrase i'll be using as well to compliment my newfound powers, before, during, or just after using said powers.

so, to be short, thanksgiving was filled with many a pie, turkey, and juice. all of which fit happily into my stomach compartment without any complaints.

Ryan and Mandy came by, and whilst they were on route, I couldn't help staring at this picture and decided to surprise him with a fun little photo manip. thing.

this is right after the part where The Joker asks Shakeman in "The Dark Shake" if he wants to know how The Joker got his scars, and Shakeman says "...yes. tell me everything." The Joker just gets this really crazy look in his eye. remember? heh.

on another bat-like note, i'm still trying to find old stuff to color to keep meself busy and the photoshop exp. flowing as i slowly build up to kill some boss i'll probably run into in some dank, dark cave where lays hidden somewhere the legendary masamune blade. so yeah, colored this.

i woulda kept pushing the contrast, or maybe messin' with the colors, but i don't like spending too much time on pictures when there's turkey a-foot.

anywho, rocked out with the family to all three extended versions of the lord of the rings. got some sketches a-coming. it's funny i think, how we can become so attached to something that isn't real. like movie characters, or stories, and experiences in the movie that never really happened... i dunno. it just makes me really appreciate life that much more when you see how sad or void a person or story gets without real closure or explanation, and the ultimate form of all closure and explanations are in the plan, which is rarely hinted to or included in a movie, and you either forget about it in the story and feel hopelessness for a character or a sense of longing for some more ultimate form of living that includes whatever awesome thing you were just a part of through your visual experience. we're just so conditioned to see an ending - to a movie, a story, or even a real person. makes life seem a little sour sometimes in contrast, but eternity has gotta be pretty sweet, once you pass on to that side of life.

so yessssss... got these doodles on the back of my notebooks onto the computer. played around with some highlighting, and here's what we got:

just grabbed a flower, dude in the red jacket just found her-SWORD!! also, Goku, Krillin, Piccolo, and Master Roshi are all making guest appearances in this picture.

dreams to be had, battles to be won, seems like i nap like there's skittles on my tongue. colorful flayvuhs be droppin' from every spectrum of the rainbow, curl down my throat, can't choke, shook up and awoke, and realize i've still got a dream that has yet to be wrote... the thoughts will come after.

i've got this habit of rhyming on all the time now, thanks to myriads of HOT BEATZ and so forth. anyways, i'd love to type something thoughtful - but once again, not today. gots other stuffs to do. maybe later.... maybe.

okay... so. i'm at school now - but i do cartoons for this other school. here's a couple of them that i just shot out really quick..... hhaahahah.... i mean, REALLLLY quick. wow. i almost feel guilty for how quick these happened......................... . . . almost.

i draw for the 'opinions' section of their paper... first week was sorta hectic, just because there was NO schedule, and i'd get a cartoon request just thrown at me from outta nowhere that they needed the next day.... but that's all done with, so hopefully these start coming out a little more polished up and what not...

hahahaaaaa... that's what it feels like. i can just see the mini 8-bit version of me, dancing to the level up music (which only involves a spin, and then continuous raising up and down of the hand until you push start or 'A' but you're not really sure, so you push both)

so yeah, FINALLY getting the hang of textures, dual brushes, and all that jibba jabba.

SO - was coloring up some more old pictures, for photoshop practice/exp. points/gil/elixirs, etc.

so.. here's the most recent installment of work doodles.
i just kept staring at the paper, but nothing happened. . . so i decided to just draw a bunch of random crap to see what came out, and it sorta evolved into this cuban/vampire looking guy.

still having ink in the blue bic pen = awesome.
heheh... today, we got so many calls i didn't even have time to doodle though.. i started getting really impatient, and grabbed a brick of sticky notes, and started animating some stick figure figures beating the STICK out of each other. i think this is my new favorite thing to do at work...

there's gotta be a program that works like a flip pad on the computer where you can create your own animations.. right? people?? cry for answers??? too much fun.

other random news - i tried to do a back flip.

i snapped my head back, right on to the carpet, which is lovingly spread over a slab of CEMENT!! wow... i felt like there was an entire floor pressing on my head for a few minutes.. and the next few days i felt a little more dazed than usual...

i will do a back flip. i swear - it's physically WAY easy to do, but the mental commitment to do one demands 100%... i think life is full of mental back flips too, but they work the same way - if you're not 100% committed to making some kind of choice, nothing's gonna happen. that, or something really bad'll happen. success=commitment.
which makes me think... since success=commitment, even though my back flip sucked all sorts of racial profanities, if i was 100% there mentally, would i have still landed on my head?? maybe. maybe not.. reminds me of a quote from like, some inventor or something.

if you could perfectly acquire a talent or ability the very first time you tried, trying wouldn't be as meaningful then... would it. you in essence would have no will, yourself, if that's how life worked for everybody.

Majin Mario: The Red Kamehameha

Mario is freaking INSANE!! i've always sorta had this funny story line in my head, where Mario pretty much just loses it, and goes on this violent rampage throughout the mushroom kingdom universe. here's a glimpse of his madness.

it's kinda like a Majin Buu or Majin Vegeta thing, if you ever saw that part of dragon ball z. or kinda like Ryu's dark hadou thing, if you tried following street fighter II, after the... ummm... original street fighter II. so yeah... like that, but Mario.

more secret photoshop moves welcome (*coff* Kory! *ahmm*) - i played around with all that jitter stuff for pen pressure. AMAZING. anyways - anybody got any quick/effective ways to digitally ink stuff? so far, my best move is adjusting levels after i scan my pencils.. that's about it.

as for life, it's good.. i'm back in this cycle of death where i stay up late, wake up late, and miss out on doing lots of little important things.. and feel like i'm not progressing as a human soul... but then my will meter keeps building up and up, until all my will-fluid howls and blasts out of my veins, and i'm able to ride this wave of gushing will for a splurge of time. being so obsessed with free time, now that it's constantly sucked up by work motivates me to do what i want to do, but if i sit still for too long, my eye-lids get heavy, and the only thing i want to do, is just help them tuck my eyes back into their sockets, and have a deep... deep... nap.
